Arclin Chemical’s experienced and highly-trained workforce are experts in manufacturing the three isomers: monomethylamine (MMA), dimethylamine (DMA) and trimethylamine (TMA) made from the raw materials methanol and ammonia. A colorless and water-soluble amide derivative of methylamines, dimethylformamide, or DMF, is created when dimethylamine (DMA) and carbon monoxide or methylformate react. Because of its miscibility with water and most common organic solvents, dimethylformamide is often used as a dipolar aprotic solvent, additive or chemical intermediate. However, one of its primary applications is as a solvent with a low evaporation rate, used in developing and producing items like pesticides, adhesives, fibers, films, synthetic leathers and surface coatings.
Another amide derivative of methylamines, dimethylacetamide, or DMAc, is formed from the reaction of dimethylamine (DMA) and acetic acid or acetic anhydride. Like dimethylformamide, DMAc is a colorless, high-boiling liquid that is also soluble in water and many organic solvents. DMAc is commonly used as a solvent for fibers, in the adhesives industry and as a reaction medium in the production of plasticizers and pharmaceuticals.

Our team is comprised of dedicated West Virginians, many second-generation employees at the facility, who make our chemical operations successful and impactful. We know that promoting their safety starts with the right training. That's why we oversee a Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) program that encourages constant awareness, consistent training and safe chemical handling for all of our employees. We regularly audit all plant areas, conduct safety reviews for new projects and implement tested uniform standards.
As a company dedicated to safety, Arclin Chemical also offers customers thorough guidance on the safe operations of our raw materials, methanol and ammonia, and our products. To ensure the proper delivery and handling of our products, we work closely with our customers, providing safety seminars and site safety surveys to reduce the risk of harmful exposure.

Sustainability starts at Arclin. We are committed to sustainability with our products, employees, contractors and communities. We pride ourselves on being a minimal waste production site, producing only 300 pounds of waste for every 180 million pounds of products produced. In doing so, we're able to properly manage our methylamine and methylamide waste to bypass landfills and reduce our environmental footprint, all while helping to create the necessary products of today and tomorrow.
In 2023, we instituted a sitewide recycling effort. We will be collecting plastic bottles on-site and recycling them in partnership with Kanawha County. We are a voice in changing reuse culture in the communities we serve by demonstrating to local students how to reuse items with STEM activities and working with the local minor league baseball team, Charleston Dirty Birds, as the official recycling partner of the 2023 season. We will be sponsoring over ten recycling stations at the ballpark all season long.
Arclin Chemical's leadership has been active in West Virginia’s initiative to provide industrial users with hydrogen and other renewable energy options. Our employees and management work with industry leaders through the West Virginia Manufacturers Association EH&S Committee, West Virginia Chamber of Commerce Environmental Committee, Kanawha-Putnam Emergency Planning Committee and ARCH2 Hydrogen Hub Coalition.
